GENERAL

Flash (APPLIES TO ONLINE VERSION ONLY)
The publication is built using Adobe Flash and requires the free Flash 8 browser plug-in. If you do not have the plug-in, you can download it here:

JavaScript (APPLIES TO ONLINE VERSION ONLY)
The publication uses JavaScript to resize the window to the maximum viewable area for your computer. If you have JavaScript disabled, the publication will not open. You can enable JavaScript in your browser settings.

Pop-up Blockers (APPLIES TO ONLINE VERSION ONLY)
Some pop-up blockers will prevent the publication from opening, or from opening links within the publication. Most pop-up blockers allow you to override them by holding down the control key while clicking on the link.

LOADING
The publication preloads low quality versions of each page before loading the high quality pages. The load time is dependent on several factors. First, is the number of pages; The more pages a publication has, the more pages it has to preload, therefore longer publications take longer to load. Second is the speed of your internet connection; the publication is a rich media product. If you are connected to the internet via a slow connection, the load time and performance of the publication will degrade.

VIDEO
The publication supports video playback prior to launching the publication. Some publishers use this space to include an advertisement. If this is so, then you will be required to view the advertisement before viewing the publication. During this time, the publication will also be preloading the pages, for faster viewing. Other publishers include a special message in the front of the publication, which can be skipped by the user. If you choose to skip this video, the publication will stop playing and caching the video, and begin preloading the pages.

FLIPPING PAGES

The arrow icons can be used to turn the pages of the publication. If you are viewing the first page of a publication, the back arrow is disabled. Likewise, if you are viewing the last page of a publication, the forward arrow is disabled.

At all times, the pages that you are on are displayed on the tool bar. Since the publication displays a full two page spread at all times, both page numbers are displayed on the tool bar. Some publications have multiple covers or inserts before the numbered pages begin. These pages are numbered using roman numerals to differentiate them from other pages.

ZOOMING
There are several methods to zoom in the publication. One method is by using the magnifying glass tool.

When you click on the magnifying glass tool, a selection box will drop down with a + and a - . You can then choose the zoom in magnifier or the zoom out magnifier. Once you have selected a magnifier, you can click on any point on a spread to zoom in or out on it. If you are in zoom in mode, the book will enlarge and center the point you selected on the middle of your screen. If the point you selected is near an edge of the publication, it will re-center as far as it can go.

You can also zoom in or out by pressing the + or – button or your tool bar. This will zoom in or out directly on the center point of the screen. At all times you can see what percentage you have zoomed to by viewing the percentage bar on the tool bar. If you want to zoom to a specific percentage, the bar can be dropped down by selecting the grey tab. You can then select the percentage you want to zoom.

MOVING
When you are zoomed in, there are several ways to move the page for optimal view.

In zoom mode, scroll bars appear to the right and at the bottom of the screen. You can drag the blue indicators left/right and up/and down to move the page. You can also click anywhere on the scroll bar and the blue indicator will snap to that location and move the page. The scroll bars also feature blue arrows which can be used to move the page in their respective directions. You can also move the page by pressing the arrows on your keyboard.

Another tool for moving the pages is the move tool. When you have selected the move tool, you can drag the pages in any direction. The move tool is also available at any time by holding down the SPACE bar on your keyboard.

LINKING

The publication may contain links to advertisers, authors or other parties in the content. You can access any link when you are in link mode. By default, you are started in link mode, but if you click on the magnifying glass tool or the move tool, you leave link mode. To return to link mode click on the link tool (arrow). Links are identified throughout the publication by a black box which appears when you move the mouse over it. Clicking on a link will open a new web browser window.

TABS

The publication contains several tabs which allow advanced viewing of the publication. When you select a tab, an pane expands from the right side of the publication window. That pane contains specific options depending on which tab you have selected. The tab that you have selected will be indicated by a circle with an X in it. You can close the pane by clicking on the selected tab again. Or you can switch to another pane by selecting one of the other available tabs.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

The table of contents allows you to skip to a specific location in within the publication. The name of an article, or page or advertisement is listed along with its corresponding page number. Clicking on it will take you to that page. Not all publications contain a table of contents.

BROWSE

The browse view shows a thumbnail of all pages in the publication. You can scroll through the thumbnails and select a page to go directly to it. You may also enter a page number in the field at the top of the pane to go directly to it without scrolling through all of the thumbnails.

TEXT SEARCH

The publication contains several options for searching text. When you open the Text Search pane you will see a text field and several buttons. When you search for an exact phrase, it will attempt to find the text exactly as it appears and in its entirety (not case sensitive) somewhere in the publication. If you search for all of the words, it will retrieve every page which contains all of the words, in any order or combination. The search results will be displayed in the pane, and they can be selected to take you directly to that page. The search terms will then be highlighted on the page.

If you select “search this spread only,” the search terms will be highlighted on the spread, but results on other pages will not be listed.

EMAIL

By clicking on the email icon, you can send a personalized email to someone containing a direct link to this publication. Clicking the icon brings up a form that can be filled out and submitted and the email will be automatically sent by our server.

PRINT

Clicking on the print icon will allow you to print the two page spread that is currently open.

FAQS
 
Q: Why is the magnifying glass not working?
A: You have either not selected a mode (+/ -) or you are at the minimum or maximum magnification.

Q: Why can't I turn the page after clicking the back (<) or next (>) arrows?
A: If you are on the first page the back arrow is disabled (<) because there is not a previous page, similarly the next arrow (>) is disabled if you are on the last page.

Q: Why are the pages blurry when I turn the page?
A: The page is loading an enhanced image for optimal reading.

Q: Why do some pages take longer to load than others?
A: Some pages contain photos and other images that are large and require more load time.

Q: Why can't I click on a link?
A1: Advertisements, website addresses or email addresses written within the publication are linked at the publishers or advertisers discretion. Therefore, some may not be activated.
A2: The links are only active when you have selected the link pointer tool. Therefore, if you are using the move tool or the magnifying glass tool, links are disabled.

Q: Why does the video skip?
A: If you have a slow internet connection, the video is not able to buffer fast enough for you to maintain uninterrupted playback. Also some Mac browsers do not support simultaneous buffering and playback.
